The plan was met by uproar by local residents who use the facilities on a regular basis. Shirley Advance was forced to rethink their proposal following overwhelming pressure from the local community and local Liberal Democrats. Liberal Democrat Councillor Simon Slater, stated, "The rethink by Shirley Advance is a welcome move. The tennis courts and bowling green are a huge asset to the area and provide people of all ages with a place to develop their sporting talents free of charge. The tennis courts in Shirley Park are the only free courts in the area and their loss would have been a huge blow to all who enjoy a good game.
